Charlie and his older brother Liam formed the band DriveSHAFT, where Charlie played bass and Liam sang lead vocals. Their biggest hit song was called You All, Everybody, which was written by Charlie. While touring Finland, Charlie and Liam argue about the band and Liam's heroin addition, which causes Charlie to become addicted as well.
The band's fame begins to fade and Liam eventually sells Charlie's piano to raise money for rehab. With the band officially broken up, Charlie resorts to stealing to support his drug habit. Charlie starts a relationship with a wealthy young woman named Lucy with the original intention of stealing from her. When he develops feelings for her, he agrees to work for her father at a normal job. Lucy then discovers Charlie's original intentions and breaks off their relationship.
Charlie receives an offer for DriveSHAFT to reunite for a tour and travels to Australia to ask Liam to reform the band. Liam refuses and Charlie decides to go to Los Angeles on his own to pursue the opportunity. He boards Oceanic Flight 815 and is in the bathroom taking heroin when the plane begins to go down.
After the crash, Charlie bonds with a pregnant Claire and always seeks attention from the other survivors due to his former fame. Locke first discovers Charlie's heroin addition and confiscates his stash. Charlie and Claire are both kidnapped both Ethan Rom, who is actually an Other. Ethan strings Charlie up and leaves him for dead and takes Claire. Charlie is fortunately saved by Jack and Kate. When Claire returns to the camp, Ethan demands that Charlie convince Claire to go back with him. Charlie kills Ethan before he can harm Claire further. Charlie also discovers a plane that had originally flown from Nigeria, bearing heroin in Virgin Mary statues.
In Season 2, Mr. Eko confronts Charlie about the Virgin Mary statues that Charlie has stashed. Claire doesn't believe that Charlie was drug free and forbids him from being with her and her son, Aaron. Charlie has terrible visions that Aaron is in danger and he kidnaps Aaron and attempts to baptize him to protect him. Locke retrieves Aaron and then beats up Charlie for his actions. As revenge, Charlie teams up with Sawyer to humiliate Locke and steal all of the guns from the other survivors.
Charlie, Sayid and Ana Lucia discover the true identity of Henry Gale. Later, Charlie is caught in the hatch explosion when Eko asks for his help in getting past Locke's barricade to get into the hatch.
After the hatch explosion, Desmond reveals that he can see the future and that he foresees that Charlie will die. Desmond spends most of Season 3 attempting to save Charlie from various deaths. When Jack leads the group to the radio tower to contact the freighter, Charlie agrees to go with Desmond to the Looking Glass station to turn off the blocking signal. While in the underwater station, Charlie makes contact with Penny Widmore and learns that she didn't send the freighter. He warns Desmond about this and then sacrifices himself to save Desmond.
After his death, Charlie appears in several visions to Hurley after he leaves the island. Charlie tells Hurley that he needs to return to the island.
