John Locke

Locke lives in a variety of foster homes as a child, being the product of a con man father (Anthony Cooper aka Sawyer and a mentally unstable mother). After meeting his mother as an adult, Locke hires a PI to help find his father. Once the two are reunited, Anthony reveals that he needs a kidney transplant in order to live. Locke donates his kidney to his father, who promptly abandons him after the surgery.

Locke becomes depressed and meets his future girlfriend, Helen, in therapy. While Helen and Locke date, Locke continues to stalk his father. Helen convinces him to let his father go, but Anthony returns and asks Locke for his help, prompting Helen to leave Locke. After a falling out with his father, Anthony pushes Locke out of a window. Locke breaks his back and ends up in a wheelchair.

While recuperating, Locke is visited by Matthew Abaddon, who tells him to go on a walkabout in Australia. Locke travels to Australia, but is denied the opportunity to participate in the walkabout, due to his wheelchair. He boards Oceanic Flight 815 to return home.

After the crash, Locke wakes up on the beach and discovers that his legs have healed. He impresses the other survivors with his hunting and tracking skills and acts as second-in-command to Jack. As a spiritual man, Locke often clashes with Jack for command. In the middle of Season 1, Locke discovers a hatch on the island. After entering the hatch, Locke is instructed by its sole inhabitant, Desmond, that he must enter a code and push a computer button every 108 minutes in order to "save the world". Locke is initially diligent in his task.

Benjamin Linus appears in Season 2, pretending to be Henry Gale, but Locke is skeptical of his cover-up story and believes he may be one of the Others. While Locke holds Ben captive, Ben attempts to create discord among Jack and Locke. Ben convinces Locke that pushing the button is not necessary and Locke loses faith. Mr. Eko, a Tailie, takes up the cause and then Locke barricades the hatch, preventing Eko from pushing the button. This causes a disruption in the electromagnetic field of the island and a subsequent explosion of the hatch.

Locke discovers the Pearl station with Eko in Season 3, which is a monitoring station. Eko dies shortly thereafter. Locke joins Kate and Sayid to rescue Jack from the Others. Locke blows up the submarine that Jack had intended to use to leave the island because he has a connection to the island and never wants to leave. Ben then shows Locke that he has his father and he will allow Locke to join the Others if he can kill his father. Locke manipulates Sawyer into killing Anthony and then travels with Ben to find the mysterious Jacob.

Ben shoots Locke because he threatens his leadership of the Others. Locke then makes his way back to the others survivors and kills Naomi, the first freighter person to appear on the island, in an attempt to prevent Jack from contacting the freighter. At the beginning of Season 4, Jack and Locke part ways and Locke takes a group of survivors back to Othertown. There, Ben tells Locke that Charles Widmore sent the freighter to find the island. Othertown is invaded by freighter people, who kill a lot of Others, as well as Rousseau and Alex. Locke then leads Ben and Hurley to Jacob's cabin (as Hurley claims to have seen it). Jacob then tells Locke that he needs to move the island in order to save it. Ben leads them to the Orchid station. Jack arrives and Locke tells him not to leave the island but, if he must, he should lie about the crash and what happened on the island. Ben and Locke enter the Orchid and Ben moves the island, thus disappearing from it.

We later learn that Locke somehow left the island and went by the name Jeremy Bentham, though we don't know when or how. He visits with Jack, Kate and Walt and tells them they need to return to the island. It is unknown whether he visits with other members of the Oceanic Six. At some point Locke dies and he is visited by Jack and Ben at the funeral home. Ben tells Jack that they need to return to the island and take Locke's body back with them.
