Lost Cast
Yunjin Kim
- Character: Sun Kwon
- Date of Birth: November 7th, 1973
- Age: 36
Yunjim was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1973. Her family immigrated to New York when she was 10 years old and she attended a performing arts high school and then studied at the London Academy of Performing Arts and Boston University. After graduating, Yunjim appeared on MTV and a few dramatic soap-opera style shows on television.
In 1996 she moved back to South Korea to appear in a series called A Gorgeous Vacation. She appeared on several other South Korean shows and then starred in her first feature film, Shiri. She then appeared in five other movies. In 2004 she was cast as Sun-Hwa Kwon in Lost. She had originally auditioned for the role of Kate. After explaining that she spoke fluent Korean, the producers created the role of Sun for her.
Sun Kwon
Sun is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paik. Her father is a powerful and ruthless businessman in Seoul, South Korea. As a young woman, her mother attempted to set her up Jae Lee. While the two hit it off, Jae revealed that he intended to marry an American woman. While leaving Jae, Sun bumped into Jin Kwon, a poor fisherman who was worked as a bellman at a hotel. Their relationship developed and Jin later proposed to Sun. He obtained her father's permission to marry and Jin began working for Mr. Paik.
Jin and Sun grew distant as Mr. Paik demanded that Jin become involved in his more nefarious dealings, including demanding him to beat up and even kill people who owned Mr. Paik money.
Sun, in turn, asked Jae Lee (who remained in South Korea) to teach her English. The two grew closer and eventually started an affair. Mr. Paik found out about the affair and they ended it. Sun and Jin had been attempting to have a child, but visited a fertility doctor after being unable to. The doctor lied and said that Sun was unable to have children, when it was Jin who was infertile (he was afraid of what Jin might do to him if he told the truth). After Jae's death, Sun decided to secretly move to the USA. She created a plan with a another woman to leave Jin while they travelled to Los Angeles for business. Jin displayed a moment of sweetness towards her at the airport and she decided not to leave him after all. The two of them boarded Oceanic Flight 815.
Initially after the crash, Sun and Jin segregated themselves from the other survivors. Jin was very overprotective of his wife and because the two didn't speak English (Sun had not yet revealed that she could), the two were somewhat separated from the group. Sun assisted Jack several times with medical emergencies by displaying knowledge of herbal remedies. Eventually Kate figures out that Sun speaks English, but she asks her to keep it a secret.
After Jin is attacked, Sun reveals that she speaks English, which causes Jin to ignore her in anger. As Jin leaves on the raft at the end of Season 1, the two reunite.
After the raft is lost, Sun and Jin are reunited. When Sun is attacked by Charlie and Sawyer while working in her garden (in Sawyer's attempt to gain control of the guns), Jin becomes overprotective again. Sun then discovers that she is pregnant.
Sun and Jin join Sayid in an attempt to help Jack, Kate and Sawyer escape from the Others at the end of Season 2 and the beginning of Season 3. When Juliet arrives at the survivors' beach, along with Jack, Sun asks her about pregnancies on the island. Juliet tells Sun that women who get pregnant on the island always die before the baby is born. Sun is unsure whether the baby is Jin's, which could result in her death, or Jae Lee's, which would mean she had become pregnant before arriving on the island. Sun and Juliet travel to the Swan medical station, where Juliet determines that Sun became pregnant on the island.
Sun travels with Jack and the rest of the group to the radio tower to contact the freighter. After meeting the freighter people, Sun becomes suspicious and she and Jin leave the beach to join Locke's group. At the end of Season 4, Sun takes off from the freighter in a helicopter, where Jin is left behind. She watches as the freighter explodes and believes that Jin is dead.
Sun returns to Los Angeles and then South Korea after being "rescued" from the island and being named one of the Oceanic Six. Using the money given to the survivors by Oceanic, Sun buys out her father's company as revenge (blaming him for never treating Jin with respect). A few months later, Sun gives birth to her daughter with Jin, calling her Ji Yeon.
A few years later, Sun travels to London to meet Charles Widmore. She tells him that the Oceanic Six aren't telling the truth and she knows he is looking for the island.
