Hurley lived in Miami before coming to the island. When he was a child, Hurley's father left the family and this abandonment caused Hurley to gain a lot of weight. As a young adult, Hurley was on a deck that collapsed and killed two people. Believing that his weight caused the collapse, Hurley sinks into a deep depression and is sent to a mental institution by his mother (where Libby was also a patient).
In the institution, Hurley met Leonard, who kept repeating the "numbers": 4 8 15 16 23 42. Hurley also became friends with Dave, who is later revealed to be a figment of his imagination. Hurley was later released from the institution.
After being released, Hurley returns to his fast-food job and moves in with his mother. He used the numbers to play the lottery and ended up winning $114 million.
After winning the lottery, Hurley has experienced a large streak of bad luck. His grandfather died, his brother's wife left him and his mother's new house caught on fire. Hurley began to suspect that the numbers were cursed. He visits Leonard in the institution, and learns that the numbers originated in Australia.
Hurley's father returns and moves back in with his mother. His father originally admits that he returned for the money, but insists that he renewed his love for his family. Hurley then travelled to Australia to visit the wife of the man who heard the numbers along with Leonard (Sam Toomey). He learned that Sam committed suicide after experiencing a string of bad luck. Hurley ended up on Oceanic Flight 815 to Lost Angeles.
After the crash, Hurley becomes very friendly with most of the other survivors. He is dependable and funny. He moves into the caves with Jack and some of the other survivors and sets up a golf course for the survivors to enjoy. He also conducts a census of the survivors and realizes that Ethan Rom was never on the plane.
Among Rousseau's maps, Hurley discovers a piece of papers with the numbers and he goes into the jungle to find her. She tells him that the numbers brought him to the island and agrees that they are cursed. After Leslie Arzt explodes when they travel to the Black Rock, Hurley's blames himself and his curse. When he, Jack, Kate and Locke attempt to blow open the hatch, Hurley sees the numbers written on the side and tries to stop them, but he fails.
After the Tailies arrive at the survivors' beach, Hurley becomes good friends with Libby. Hurley admits that he's been hoarding food and she encourages him to destroy it and lose weight. He later begins seeing Dave in the jungle. Dave tells Hurley that being on the island is just a dream and he's really back in the institution. Libby convinces Hurley that it isn't a dream and brings him back to the beach. Hurley plans a romantic picnic for the two of them, but Libby gets shot by Michael.
Hurley decides to accompany Michael, Jack, Sawyer and Kate to retrieve Walt from the Others. Michael is exposed as a traitor and Hurley is allowed to return to the beach while Jack, Kate and Sawyer are taken by the Others.
After the hatch explodes, Hurley suspects that Desmond can see the future. He later follows Vincent into the jungle where he finds an old DHARMA van. Hurley is on a hike with Desmond, Jin and Charlie when they first encounter Naomi, who has parachuted onto the island.
Hurley offers to accompany Charlie and Desmond to the Looking Glass station, but Charlie refuses the offer. Instead, Hurley joins Jack, Claire and the other survivors on the hike to the radio tower to contact the freighter. When Sayid, Jin and Bernard are captured by the Others on their beach, Hurley rescues them using the old DHARMA van.
Hurley is upset about Charlie's death and agrees to accompany Locke, Claire, Sawyer and other survivors to Othertown. Hurley soon becomes concerned about Locke's methods, particularly when he takes Charlotte hostage from the freighter. After Othertown is attacked and the group flees, Hurley opts to go with Ben and Locke to find Jacob's cabin.
Hurley follows Locke and Ben to the Orchid station. Jack and Sawyer meet up with Hurley at the Orchid station and he accompanies them back to the helicopter. Hurley, Jack, Sawyer, Sayid and Frank Lapidus leave the island on the helicopter and head for the freighter. They pick up Sun, Aaron and Desmond and make it off the freighter before it explodes. The island disappears and Hurley says that Locke moved the island, but Jack disagrees. Hurley is with the rest of the Oceanic 6, along with Desmond and Lapidus when they're rescued by Penny.
Hurley reunites with his family after returning to the United States. Hurley tells a reporter that he doesn't want the lottery money anymore, still believing that it is bad luck. He eventually returns home to his mother's mansion. His friends and the Oceanic 6 join him for a birthday party and his father gives him a Camaro as a gift. Hurley notices that the gas milage features the numbers and Hurley is very upset by this.
Hurley heads to Korea after Sun has her baby and goes with her to visit Jin's grave.
Hurley sees a vision of Charlie while in a convenience store. He is arrested after running out and starting a car chase with the police. He sees Charlie again while in the police station. The police offers to put Hurley in a mental institution and Hurley agrees. Hurley is checked into Santa Rosa Mental Hospital.
While in the institution, Hurley is visited by Matthew Abaddon, who asks Hurley whether the other survivors are still alive. Abaddon disappears after Hurley goes to get security. Hurley is then approached by Charlie. Hurley believes these visions means he's going crazy, but Charlie tells him he's dead but really there. Charlie tells Hurley “they need you”.
Jack visits Hurley in the hospital to ensure that he won't tell the truth about the island. Hurley apologizes to Jack for going to Othertown with Locke and then says that maybe they should return to the island. Jack tells him they won't be going back.
At the end of Season 4, Hurley is visited by Walt, who tells him that Jeremy Bentham visited him. Sayid later visits Hurley in the hospital, intending to take him away to somewhere safe.
