- Character: Sayid Jarrah
- Date of Birth: January 17th, 1969
- Age: 40
Naveen was born in 1969 in London, England. He was raised as a Methodist in what he called a "repressive upbringing". While in high school at 16, he fell in love with his math teacher, and the two had a son together in 1992. He was teased constantly for going out with his teacher.
Naveen later attended a London drama school with Ewan McGregor. He first appeared in the movie London Kills Me in 1991. He later went on to play the role of Kip in the critically acclaimed The English Patient in 1996. He also battled alcoholism and heroin addiction in the mid-1990s.
He has also appeared in the TV series Double Vision and The Beast, and in several other feature films, including Mighty Joe Young, Rollerball, Bride & Prejudice and Grindhouse.
Naveen was cast as Sayid Jarrah in 2004. Sayid was not written in the original draft of the first Lost episode, but the producers always want to have an international cast for the show. One of the executive consultants had worked with Naveen on The Beast, which was short-lived, and wanted to cast him on Lost.
Sayid Jarrah
Sayid's father was an Iraqi war hero from the Iran-Iraq war. Said later joined the Iraqi Republication Guard as a communications officer who was also a radio and mechanical engineer. During the Gulf War, Sayid and his team were captured by American soldiers. Once the Americans realized he spoke English, they enlisted his help in questioning his superior office about a missing American pilot. Two American soldiers who were holding Sayid were Kelvin Inman (who was later on the island with Desmond) and Sam Austen (Kate's father). Sayid later uses torture to extract information from his superior officer about an attack on his home town.
At the end of the Gulf War, Sayid returns to serve in the Republican Guard and vows not to torture again, but that promise is short-lived as he soon becomes a torturer for the Republican Guard. He is later called in to torture one of his childhood friends, Nadia, who is suspected of being a terrorist. Sayid falls in love with her instead and helps her escape.
Sayid leaves the Republican Guard to try to find Nadia. He travels to France and England. While in England, he is arrested by the government, who want his help capturing terrorists in Australia that he used to know. They promise to tell his where Nadia is if he helps them.
Sayid accepts the deal and travels to Australia He meets up with the terrorists and convinces one of them to become a suicide bomber. Just before the attack, Sayid admits to his friend that he's working for the CIA and his friends kills himself. Sayid is then given a ticket to Los Angeles by the CIA and he boards Oceanic Flight 815.
After the crash, Sayid fixes a radio transceiver and leads a group of the survivors into the jungle to send a distress call. His radio picks up a mysterious French transmission that he realizes has been broadcasting for 16 years. Shannon later suffers from an asthma attack and Sayid tortures Sawyer for the location of Shannon's medication. Sayid later feels guilty when he finds out that Sawyer doesn't have the medication.
He goes off into the jungle himself because he broke his promise not to torture. He is then captured by Danielle Rousseau, who thinks that he is one of the Others. She tells him that she arrived on the island 16 years earlier with her science team and all of the other members of her team were killed by a sickness that was carried by the Others.
Sayid returns to the beach and enlists Shannon's help to translate Danielle's maps of the island. The two develop a relationship. After returning from a romantic trip to an empty beach, Shannon and Sayid are told of Boone's death.
In Season 2, Shannon tells Sayid that she has been seeing Walt in the jungle, but Sayid doesn't believe her. Sayid runs after her into the jungle and tells Shannon he loves her. At this point, he also sees Walt. Shannon runs off and gets shot by Ana Lucia. Sayid holds her as she dies.
Danielle later takes Sayid to see a man she has captured. This man introduces himself as Henry Gale (aka Benjamin Linus). Sayid brings Henry to the hatch and he and Locke keep Henry locked up in the armoury. Sayid is dissatisfied with Henry's answers and begins to beat the truth out of him. He then goes with Ana Lucia and Charlie to find the location of Henry's balloon. When they return, Sayid tells Henry that they found the balloon and the body of the real Henry Gale.
Sayid becomes suspicious of Michael and tells Jack that he suspects Michael is working with the Others. He teams up with Jack to trap the Others and then he, Jin and Sun take Desmond's boat around the island to set the trap. After arriving at their destination (and seeing a mysterious broken four-toed statue), Sayid soon realizes that Jack and his other friends have been captured. The Others storm Desmond's boat and one of them is shot by Sun. Sayid, Jin and Sun then return the survivors' beach.
Sayid travels with Locke and some others to the Pearl station. He manages to catch a signal from one of the television screens of a mysterious man with an eye patch. Sayid later joins Kate and Rousseau to rescue Jack from the Others. The three of them encounter Mikhail (with the eye patch) at the Flame station. Mikhail reveals that he is the sole survivor of the DHARMA Initiative, but Sayid doesn't believe him. They then manage to capture Bea Klugh, who is one of the Others, but Mikhail captures Locke and Sayid then trades one hostage for the other. As they leave the Flame station, it explodes, and Sayid blames Locke for that, but Locke denies any involvement. Mikhail is later killed when Locke pushes him through a sonar fence, which is blocking their journey to Othertown.
After arriving at Othertown, Sayid and Kate are captured. They manage to escape and Jack, Kate, Sayid and Juliet return to the beach. Sayid is deeply mistrustful of Juliet, but Jack defends her. Said then meets up with Naomi, who asks him to fix her satellite phone. He then agrees to stay on the beach with Bernard and Jin to detonate the dynamite they have rigged to kill the Others. The three men are captured by the Others, but are saved by Hurley.
At the beginning of Season 4, Desmond returns to the beach to tell Sayid of Charlie's death and his message that the freighter was not sent by Penny Widmore. When Jack and Locke fight, Sayid chooses to remain with Jack, angry that Locke blew up the Others' submarine. Sayid and Desmond then take the freighter people's helicopter to travel to the freighter and Sayid witnesses Desmond's travel through time. While meeting with the freighter's captain, they witness Regina (one of the freighter people) walk off the side of the boat. The captain tells Sayid that he is working for Charles Widmore. Sayid and Desmond later meet Michael, who is working on the freighter undercover. Sayid then takes one of the rafts back to the island. He and Kate go get Jack and then take the helicopter to the freighter, along with Hurley, Frank Lapidus and Sawyer (who jumps out to save them). They pick up Desmond, Sun and Aaron from the freighter and then take off as the freighter explodes and the island disappears. The group drifts in the ocean until they are rescued by Penny's boat and later return to the real world as the Oceanic 6.
After arriving in Hawaii, Sayid and Nadia are reunited. They get married and then Nadia is killed. Ben confronts Sayid at Nadia's funeral and tells him that his wife's assassin worked for Charles Widmore, who wanted Nadia dead. Sayid begins to work as an assassin for Ben. Sayid later travels to California to break Hurley out of the mental institution.
