Episode Recap:
Two hour episodes, while nice in terms of viewing, are exhausting to recap, so bear with me here. Welcome to the season 5 finale of Lost. Doesn't it just seem like yesterday that we rejoined our survivors on the island and off of it? That we were introduced to time travel and frozen donkey wheels and paradoxes? How can it be OVER?
Previously on Lost.....well, 5 seasons of the show happened. A plane crashed onto crazy, mysterious island, basically, and a whole whack of bad sh*t happened. Like deaths, time travel, more plane crashes, boat explosions and long-running and increasingly complex love quadrangles.
I tuned in at 8:00 by the way, thinking that since this was a two hour episode, it would be starting earlier. It wasn't until about 4 minutes into the episode that I realized it was a bloody recap. ARGH! I thought they were just doing a really long "previously on Lost" segment. Great. Now I have an hour to kill.....
Alright, it's 9:00 now and the finale is finally on. We open in....somewhere old? Someone's spinning on a loom and weaving thread. It's a new guy. Then he's fishing in the ocean. He spies a boat off the coast and another man (Mr. Black Shirt) comes out to the beach to greet him. Mr. Black Shirt asks how the people on the ship found the island and accuses Mr. White Shirt (the guy who was weaving) of bringing them there. The ship in question is the "Black Rock". He says the people on the ship will fight and corrupt and other bad stuff. Black Shirt says he really wants to kill White Shirt and will do so, once he finds "a loophole". Ah! White Shirt is JACOB! I knew it! And what lies in the shadow of the statue, you might ask? Jacob does. We see a side profile of the statue towering above Jacob on the beach and it's definitely an ancient Egyptian deity. This is fricking awesome.
Now we see a young Kate with that friend of hers....the one who had the plane. She goes into a convenience store with him and swipes a lunch box. I think this is the lunch box that they ended up burying the little plane in. The clerk realizes that little Kate is trying to steal the lunch box and goes to call her mom. Except JACOB (OMG!) is in the store too and offers to pay for it. The clerk accepts the money and tells Kate not to come back. Kate thanks Jacob and he asks "you're not going to steal anymore, are you?" He tells her to be good and walks off.
Flash to 1977 on the island, where the sub (along with Sawyer, Juliet and Kate) is getting underway. Kate says they have to leave the sub and says she came back to get Sawyer. She tells the others that Jack is trying to blow up the island and they need to stop him. Sawyer says he wants no part of this mess.
In the tunnels, Jack wonders how they're going to move the bomb. Sayid's going through Faraday's journal and it contains instructions to remove the plutonium core and detonate it. Richard thinks this is a bad plan, because, hello(!), it was leaking radiation 20 years ago and isn't all this terribly dangerous? He reveals that Eloise is pregnant (with Faraday, most likely). Sayid says once they remove the core, they only have two hours to get it to the Swan construction site.
Radzinsky arrives at the Swan site and is pissed that Chang has stopped the drilling. Radzinsky is adamant that they keep drilling and gets it going again.
In 2007, the Others are still following Locke to find Jacob. Locke lets the group take a break and Sun asks Ben who Jacob is. Ben says Jacob is in charge of the island and he's never met him (is he lying?). Richard admits to Locke that he knows Ben strangled Locke. He wonders how Locke came back to life. Locke thinks Richard should know how it happened, but Richard says he's never seen someone come back to life. Richard admits that he doesn't age because of Jacob and he thinks Jacob also brought Locke back to life. Locke says once they've seen Jacob they'll need to "deal with" the rest of the Ajira passengers. And "deal with" means "kill".
Ilana, Bram and some of the other guys have brought Lapidus in a canoe to the main island. Bram wonders why they brought Lapidus along, considering he didn't know the answer to the statue shadow question, but Ilana thinks he might be important. Bram asks if Lapidus might be a "candidate" (no idea).
Lapidus asks who they are and Ilana says they're "friends". The 4 guys transport the box up onto the beach. Lapidus asks what's in there and Ilana asks the boys to open it. Lapidus looks inside and says "terrific", but we can't see what's inside.
Cut to a double-funeral. I'm thinking this is the funeral for Sawyer's parents. As a young Sawyer sits on the steps, trying to write a letter, Jacob comes up and offers him a pen. He calls Sawyer "James" and says he's sorry about his parents. Little Sawyer is writing his letter to Con Man Sawyer. Another man comes up and sees part of the letter. Is this Sawyer's uncle or something? The man tells little Sawyer that he should move on from this.
Back in the sub, Sawyer is trying to process Jack's plan to change the future (or the past or whatever) so that flight 815 doesn't crash. But Sawyer is still insistent on leaving. A Dharma comes by with their sedatives and Juliet knocks him out. She says they can't let the people on the island die and Sawyer agrees to help her. Juliet holds the sub captain at gunpoint and orders him to resurface the sub.
back in the tunnels, Sayid is trying to remove the bomb's core. Richard tells Jack that 20 years ago Locke came into their camp and said he was going to be their leader. He admits that he's left the island three times since then to meet Locke, but didn't find him to be special. Jack says he knows Locke and tells Richard "If I were you, I wouldn't give up on him", which is probably the nicest thing Jack's ever said about Lock.
In 2007, Locke asks Ben why he hasn't told Richard about his plan to kill Jacob. Ben says Alex's ghost ordered him to follow Locke. Locke quickly realizes Ben's like his puppet now and he wants Ben to kill Jacob.
Sayid and Nadia are discussing where to go for their anniversary. They're crossing the street in LA and Jacob asks Sayid for directions. Nadia continues to cross the street and gets struck by a car. Sayid runs out to her and moments later she dies.
Back in the tunnels, Sayid is wrapping up the plutonium core. Sayid, Jack, Richard and Eloise start walking through the tunnels. Richard stops at a wall and uses a sledgehammer to break through it. On the other side is a the basement of a Dharma house. Jack wants to go first, but Eloise says she's in charge and since she's willing to kill Dharma people, while Jack may not be, she's going first. Instead, Richard knocks her out. He says he's protecting Eloise, who's their leader (!), and Richard tells Jack and Sayid they're on their own.
The two boys enter the main floor of the Dharma house and see that Dharmaville is still full of people walking around. Sayid dons a jumpsuit and the boys try to escape through the crowd, but they're spotted by Roger Linus, who recognizes Sayid as the man who shot Ben. Roger shoots Sayid in the stomach and Jack starts up a gunfight. Jack tries to escape with Sayid and Jin, Hurley and Miles drive by in the VW van just in the nick of time. The boys pile in and off they go.
Kate, Sawyer and Juliet are in a raft, having just left the sub. They're peddling back to the beach and Juliet is looking longingly back at the sub. On the beach, Kate thanks Juliet for supporting her. Sawyer admits he doesn't know where they are and VINCENT comes running out of the jungle. Oh my GOD! Rose and Bernard! They're back! Bernard looks like Moses. I love it!
Back in the VW bus, Jack is trying to save Sayid. Is Sayid going to die? Jack tells Sayid to head to the Swan site if they want to save Sayid.
Rose and Bernard say they've been living in the jungle for the last three years. Oh, how I missed them! Sawyer says they tried to find them back in 1974 and Rose says she knew exactly what Sawyer and the others were up to. She says they're "retired". Bernard says they decided to build an ocean-front condo and live out the rest of their days on the island.
Kate says Jack has a bomb and Rose replies "Who cares? It's always something with you people...." THIS is why I missed Rose. Juliet asks for directions to Dharmaville. Bernard isn't too bothered by getting blown up. He says at least he and Rose will die together and that's all that matters. Those involved in the ridiculous quadrangle don't really seem to grasp the fact that maybe love and relationships CAN be that bloody simple. Rose sends them off with directions.
In 2007, Ilana and her friends are trekking through the jungle. Lapidus asks what they're going to do with the box and Bram says they need to show it to someone. Bram says they're the good guys, but Lapidus doesn't buy it. The group arrives at their destination, which looks like an old and ruined cabin (Jacob's cabin?). There's ash on the ground and Ilana approaches the cabin.
Cut to a Russian hospital, where Ilana is lying on a bed with a heavily bandaged face. Jacob stops by for a visit. He apologizes for not coming sooner, but she says she's happy to see him. He asks for her help and she agrees. In 2007, Ilana enters the empty cabin and finds a note or a map or something stuck to the wall with a knife
Ilana rejoins the others outside and says "he" isn't there. She says someone else has been using the cabin and orders her men to burn it. The boys throw in molotov cocktails and we see that Ilana found a piece of cloth with an Egyptian symbol on it. I think this is the same cloth Jacob was weaving at the beginning of the episode. As the cabin burns, the group leaves.
Jacob is reading a book on a bench while Locke gets pushed out of a window by his father. He approaches Locke and touches him on the shoulder. Locke wakes up and.....did Jacob heal him? Jacob walks off and says everything's going to be fine.
Back in 2007, the group is still trekking along the beach. Locke and Sun find their old beach camp and Locke tells everyone to rest up for a while. Locke approaches Ben, who's sitting alone on the beach. Behind Ben is the Swan hatch door. Locke asks Ben what happened that day at the cabin, when he first took him to meet Jacob. Ben says he was pretending to talk to Jacob.
Locke wants to know why Ben made it all up. Ben says he was embarrassed that he had never seen Jacob and I don't know if he's really telling the truth here. He asks why Locke wants him to kill Jacob and Locke says that Ben got cancer and saw his daughter die and then got banished. Locke says he did all that to serve Jacob, a man he's never even met, so why wouldn't he want to kill him?
Sun is walking through the camp and finds Aaron's old cradle. Inside the cradle she finds Charlie's old ring and then flashes back to her own wedding to Jin. The two of them exchange vows and rings. Jacob's there too, speaking Korean and giving his congratulations. Sun asks Jin who that was, but he admits he doesn't know.
Back in the van, Sayid's bleeding pretty bad. Miles asks what the bomb is going to do, but Jack doesn't give a definitive answer. Sayid wants to modify the bomb to detonate at a certain time. Unfortunately, Kate, Juliet and Kate are standing in the middle of the road, packing guns and looking pissed as hell.
